I'm Dan Donnan and I quit my job to spend my days making video games. This blog is mostly me writing about that.

I worked as a Software Developer for Citrus Lime for 3 years, and before that worked at TT Fusion for 5 years on many LEGO games, starting as a QA Tester before leaving as a Senior Game Scripter.

I'm very experienced with C# and unfortunately the same is true for JavaScript. After initially not liking it, I've come to accept Typescript. I'm OK with C++ until I get confused about pointers and references, and it's been about a decade but I just about remember Java.

Getting Started with the FireRed Decompilation

 Many years ago, I was a ROM hacker. I never finished a project, not because of the classic "I've started, so I'll not finish" trap that many home projects fall into, but because the ROM is so fragile that doing anything can completely break it and you need to constantly be creating back-ups if you want to progress at all. I've had my eye on the Pokémon FireRed decompilation project for a while, and a few months ago I decided to get started with it. Unlike ROM hacking which edits the actual game file, the decompilation project is a reverse-engineered code base which can be edited and then built into an actual game. It generally means that there's no need to be constantly creating back-ups (unless, for some reason, source control isn't being used), and it's much easier to change or add completely new features to the game.

The Month of Games #3 - Heart of the Cards

It's now the third week of August, which means it's time for the third game in The Month of Games. If you have Tabletop Simulator on Steam, you will be able to use this . And if you don't, it is possible to play with other people in person as long as you have a deck of cards and follow the ruleset .

Tonight Matthew, I'm Going to Make...

Just before I began working on Bird Game, I was lying in bed thinking about what I was going to work on now I'd ruled the football game out. It seemed like I was going to go and do a puzzle game, but then there are two ideas for games that would be ideal for releasing at Halloween, primarily because one is actually set then, and the other involves ghosts. So now I have to choose which of those I am going to do, because trying to develop multiple games at the same time doesn't seem like a good idea. Especially if both the ones I pick are the Halloween games because they will be releasing at the same time. But then a thought occurred.
